Bentley Weekly Update 16/04/21

Vocabulary - Over the coming term, children will be explicitly taught two new vocabulary words each week linked to their learning.  For a child to be a proficient reader s/he obviously needs to be able to decode the words on the page, but s/he must also be able to attach meaning to those words.  To be a successful writer and be able to convey ideas effectively, s/he needs to have command of a rich variety of words.  To understand subjects such as maths, history and science s/he needs to comprehend relevant verbal words.  Vocabulary is fundamental for academic success.  In order to learn new vocabulary, a child needs to hear a word at least 50 times before they even begin to use it.  Therefore, please drop the weekly words into your conversations as much as possible and as many times as you can over the course of the week. The children do not need to be tested or questioned about these words, just hear them again and again in conversation.   We will also be doing the same at school which will strengthen and enrich your child's vocabulary and academic success.  KS1 children will be given stickers, and KS2 will record words in their diaries.  Weekly words will also be on the weekly class blogs along with homework.
