Weekly Update 20/05/16

Adders Class were visited by a nutritionist this week who brought with her some really tasty healthy eating ideas for us all to try including vegetables with healthy dips and even a reduced sugar chocolate cake with sweet potato in! We also tried some unusual fruits that many of us had not tried before as well as some more familiar items. The following day we were sent two trays of healthy sandwiches with a variety of fillings to try. Everybody tried at least one thing new and many of the children really tucked in and enjoyed the healthy foods. The nutritionist will email us the recipes for a lot of the dishes and as soon as she does, we will forward them to all parents in case you would like to try some of the ideas. Please look on the website on the gallery for photos of the visit.

This year’s Year 4 sleepover has now been confirmed for Friday 17th June. This time we will be staying in Copdock School hall. The intention is to have some fun and games outdoors in the woodland area, followed by picnic tea (possibly evening fire and songs) and a film night in the hall. A letter with all the details will be coming home after half term.

Wolves class have rather excitedly released their butterflies today. They seemed very reluctant to leave the safety of their butterfly home but were eventually persuaded to fly free. The children have so enjoyed watching the process from caterpillar to butterfly and their topic books are brimming with information they have gathered and learnt. We can’t wait to share them with you soon.

Reception parents – please call the office to arrange a half termly catch-up with Mrs Rudge, appointments are available at different times before and after half term, the office has the details.

Maths Homework – All children in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 have games on Abacus to complete. Some children have got a big, big backlog of games that are now outstanding. If you are having problems logging in to your child’s account, please contact the office who can give you passwords, codes and directions to the website. If your child is struggling, please speak to their class teacher.

Here at Bentley we have been fortunate enough to not have anyone with severe nut allergies so we have not had to implement a nut free policy, however, one of the new children coming in from September has a serious allergy to nuts so we need to make sure that this is a safe environment for them to learn in. Accordingly, please could we ask you to ensure that any food items sent in for home for either lunch or snack do not contain nuts. We appreciate it is almost impossible to be completely nut free as many products say ‘cannot guarantee nut free’ or ‘may contain nuts’ to cover themselves legally but we need to avoid foods that obviously contain nuts, such as nutty cereal bars, almond slices and raw or roasted nuts among others. Severe allergic reactions to nuts can be triggered by coming into contact with nut products, not just by eating them so please help us to keep children safe by supporting this policy; until the end of the school year this restriction needs to be adhered to on Fridays when the Bunnies are in, from September it will need to be followed every day. Thank you in anticipation for your support.

Our resident feathered friends are in need of some looking after over the holidays and weekends. They are good chickens and very friendly, especially when you have food. All that is required is to let them out in the morning and get them in before dark and top up their food and water.  If you can help out on any weekend or any days during half term and or the summer holiday, please let us know.

Many of you will know Mike Harden, his grandchildren came to the school and despite them being much older now, Mr Harden still comes in every week to hear the children read. This week Mr Harden gave more than his time and presented the school with a large amount of Lego, which, as we all know, costs a small fortune. This gift has more than doubled our quantity of Lego in the school and we wanted to take this opportunity to thank Mr Harden for his generosity and continued support.

The free Tuesday after school sports club for next half term will be football up at the field. It is open to children in years 2 – 6. Children will need to be collected from the school field at 4:15pm. If your child would like to participate please email the school by no later than this Thursday, 26th May. We are still looking for parents to help walk the children up to the school field on Tuesday afternoons and be an extra adult while they do PE up there. So far nobody has come forward to help. If you can do just one session we would love to hear from you.

Next week – the children break up for their half term break next Thursday 26th. Year 2 will be sitting their SATs papers over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so if you could avoid ringing or buzzing the front door on the morning of those days, it would be greatly appreciated. Emails will be checked regularly. Mrs Rudge is on a course on Wednesday and Mrs Smith will be here covering.

Children return on Monday 6th June, year 1 will have swimming as normal. Selected children from years 5 and 6 will be taking part in the swimming gala on Tuesday 7th June; a letter with more detail will be coming home next week. And finally, the new intake of children in September will be starting Bunnies on Friday 10th June, please join us in welcoming them to our lovely school community if you come across them. Have a lovely weekend.
