Wolves 13.6.22

Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 5:17pm

Dear parents,

Learning this week

This week, in Wolves, for our topic work, we are learning about Mersea Island - what Mersea Island is like as a place (geography)  and linking this learning to seaside holidays of the past and how places became seaside resorts in Victorians times (history). After looking at kites, we will we will explore materials used to make them and test which ones are suitable through experiments (DT). In PSHE we are continuing our discussions about personal safety and focussing on safe places to play outside of school, and spotting potential dangers, eg using play equipment at the park safely, acting safely at the swimming pool etc. In science the children are studying the interdependence of plants and animals through food chians and habitats.

In mathematics Reception will be continuing their daily practise of counting and subitising, and will be exploring different ways to make doubles. Year 1 will be looking in detail at 2 digit numbers, for example making 2-digit numbers using apparatus, counting forward and back in tens and ones from different 2-digit numbers and comparing 2 digit numbers. Year 2 will be working on solving calculations using their addition, subtraction multiplication and division knowledge.

In English writing, we will begin to look at our new book 'Grandad's Island'. Meeting the characters, Grandad and Syd, and the relationships between them. This is a narrative unit, and Year 1 and 2 will re-write the beginning of story, while reception will use their phonics to write some simple sentences about each double page.

As usual, the children in Yr1 and Reception will have half an hour of phonics daily, while Year 2 use this time to practise spelling rules and grammar. Children will be listened to reading in their groups, practising decoding, use of intonationand expression and comprehension of what they are reading, including making inferences from the text.
