Reading Books

Year1:

Your child will be issued with three reading books every week. New books will be issued on a Friday but will be collected in on a Thursday. This will enable books to be cleaned and quarantined and new books to be organised. Please keep reading books in your child’s folder. Reading each book at least 3 times will help your child to develop their decoding skills and to increase their fluency.

Read 1 – Your child may rely heavily on their decoding skills to read the text. Model to your child how to sound out the words and blend these together ie –“ c….a…..t cat”

Read 2 – Your child should reread the text with some increased fluency. Continue to help them to sound out and also encourage the recognition of whole words. If they can’t be sounded out, just tell your child.

Read 3 – Your child should read more fluently which will enable you to ask more questions about the text, using the example questions provided. This will help to develop their comprehension skills and understanding

We ask that you hear your child read their school reading book for 10 minutes at least five times a week. This forms part of our ‘reading challenge’.

Please be reassured that in the early stages of learning to read, repetition of revisiting and re-reading the same text is valuable because it develops confidence and fluency.

Spellings

Ten new spellings will be given next & then every Friday. We use an online tool called ‘Spelling Shed’ to help your child learn their spellings. You can find their log in details in their yellow reading diary. Your child will take part in a spelling quiz every Friday. Please help your child learn their spellings during the course of the week. Thank you

Year 2

Your child will be given 5 new books every Friday.  Books which have been read can be handed in on Tuesday and Thursday.  We will be supporting children to pop their books into the yellow box in school.  Spellings start next Friday.

Please read at least 5 times a week and we are starting the reading challenge on Monday 14th.  Once your child has read 5 times for 10 weeks they will receive a certificate.

Please check the Squirrel blog daily because I will be adding information here.

Questions to help reading will follow next week.
